SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE BUOYS
Model SST-001
|
|

The SOSI Model SST-001 Sea Surface Temperature (SST) buoys are single
sensor oceanographic data buoys typically provided complete with mooring
line, anchor and mooring hardware. They are capable of measuring and
recording highly accurate temperature data for periods in excess of
twenty-four months. The buoy hulls are constructed of fiberglass and
filled with buoyant polyurethane foam. A watertight compartment is
integrated into the fiberglass structure. An internal chassis and endcap
assembly supports the temperature sensor, data logger, ARGOS
transmitter, antenna and battery pack. This buoy and mooring design are
unusually rugged, and were developed for deployment in fully exposed
shallow water locations subject to relatively high currents and high
levels of solar radiation.
An EDL-880 data logger is used to control all aspects of the buoy
operation including data transmission, switching and power management
functions implemented to minimize power consumption. Power is supplied
by an internal alkaline battery pack. The buoys can be stored in a
dormant state and awakened by removing an external magnet. A Telonics
ST-13 or ST-20 ARGOS PPT is used to transmit a subset of the daily data.
The buoys are supplied with an internal moisture detector. Onboard
diagnostics, including the moisture detector, battery power level, and
fault conditions, etc. are incorporated in the data transmission.
Sensors:
SeaBird SBE 39: This instrument is a precision temperature sensor and
recorder. It has a measurement range of –5°C
to +35°C, a resolution of 0.0001°C,
and an initial accuracy of .002°C.
It will be put into a self-recording mode and will be polled by the
EDL-880 data logger for data.
