Middlebury College’s New Research Vessel Equipped With 2 SOSI Winches
(August 2012) The R/V David Folger, a 42-foot aluminum survey catamaran, represents a new class of modern, economical, yet sophisticated research vessels that represent a growing market for SOSI’s lightweight all electric instrumentation winches. The Folger was built by All American Marine in Bellingham, Washington (an hour North of SOSI) and carries a 2 HP ECO Winch for CTD/Water Sampling. SOSI also provided a custom hydraulic winch with free-wheeling mode, manual brake, and two removable drums; one for gravity coring and general hauling and one for towing a side scan sonar. SOSI collaborated with All American to design and build a console on the upper deck next to both winches that integrates controls for vessel steerage and propulsion, the ECO Winch (CTD), Hydraulic Main Winch, the hydraulic A-frame and Pull Master winch.
The Folger has been transported from the West Coast through the Panama Canal and offloaded in Port Everglades, Florida (22 August, 2012) where she will begin her voyage to her home port on Lake Champlain. http://www.middlebury.edu/academics/geol/facilities/newvessel
