Sound Ocean Systems, Inc. Press Release

S

ound Ocean Systems, Inc. (SOSI) of Redmond, WA has manufactured and delivered a special purpose winch to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). The winch will be used for pulling sensor packages out of seafloor bore holes and for recovering abandoned anchors from the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. The winch is constructed of aluminum to minimize weight and is powder coated for corrosion protection. The winch has an 8,000 lb. line pull at mid-drum and has a maximum line speed of 110 meters per minute at full drum. The winch has two speed ranges including low speed for high line pull and high speed for low line pull. The drum has a storage capacity 5,000 meters of 7/16” line. A variable angle “weave wind” style levelwind can accommodate a wide range of vertical fleet angles. The hydraulic power unit can be separated and located remote from the winch. Similarly, the winch control unit, with its LCI-90 cable data display, can be separated and used to operate the winch remotely.

Sound Ocean Systems, Inc.
