FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
S
ound Ocean Systems, Inc. Delivers Submersible Diesel Generator Power Modules
Sound Ocean Systems, Inc. (SOSI) of Redmond, WA has completed the last of nine submersible diesel generator modules to Input-Output DigiCOURSE (I/O) in support of their new generation buoy based VSO 3-D seismic survey system. Having initially built a prototype last year, SOSI developed a “Beta” pre-production unit earlier this year followed by the first eight production units just completed. I/O has awarded SOSI a follow-on contract for the next production run of ten additional generator units due to be delivered at the end of January.
SOSI’s unique design features diesel generators housed in water tight enclosures that are attached to the underside of I/O’s VSO data buoys. The submersible generator units are supplied by SOSI complete with hull, ballast, batteries, fuel tank, diesel engine, alternator, cooling system, ventilation system, controller, and software. Because the module is completely underwater during operation, each unit is also supplied with snorkels for combustion air and ventilation.
During the development of this product SOSI installed a 3,000 gallon test tank with 2-ton overhead crane that allows handling and submerged testing of the assembled diesel generators. Each diesel engine is run-in for 200 hours before being integrated into the assemblies. A unique feature of the run-in process is that engines are run three at a time in a special test fixture located approximately twenty miles from SOSI’s facility. During run-in the engines are remotely controlled and monitored by SOSI via the internet.
Sound Ocean Systems, Inc. (SOSI) is located in Redmond, Washington, USA and for more than 28 years has provided commercial, academic and governmental customers around the world with a variety of quality marine products and services including oceanographic data buoys, ocean data platforms, moorings & instrumented moored systems, diesel generator power modules for buoys, high and low-speed tow bodies, self-propelled and towed seafloor vehicles, marine instrumentation and ROV umbilical winches, launch & recovery systems, and other specialized deck equipment.
