FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
S ound Ocean Systems, Inc. (SOSI) of Redmond, WA has completed another round of refurbishments of oceanographic monitoring stations, sea surface temperature buoys, and seafloor oceanographic data platforms in support of the NMFS Honolulu Laboratory Coral Reef Ecosystem Investigation (CREI). The buoys and bottom platforms had been returned to SOSI after two year deployments in the Pacific and are now ready to be redeployed for another two years. The refurbishment of ocean observation equipment manufactured by SOSI included one enhanced oceanographic data buoy with Iridium telemetry, two standard oceanographic data buoys with ARGOS telemetry, six sea surface temperature buoys with ARGOS telemetry, and two seafloor oceanographic data platforms. The order also included a number of new anchors and elastic mooring elements for the buoy based systems. The standard buoy sensor suite includes wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, atmospheric temperature as well as near surface water temperature and conductivity. The enhanced buoys have an in-water four channel solar light sensor, a four channel solar light reference sensor, and GPS receiver in addition to the basic sensor suite contained on the standard buoys. All meteorological and oceanographic parameters are measured hourly and the data is logged within the buoys and telemetered to shore daily. The bottom platforms similarly provide current profiles, temperature, and conductivity data that can be retrieved once the platforms are recovered from the seafloor. During the refurbishment process all sensors are returned to their manufacturers for checkout and calibration. The buoy bodies as well as the surface and subsurface sensor masts are cleaned and repainted before new 24-month battery packs are installed. The buoy systems are fully tested including end to end system tests using satellite telemetry before being shipped back to NOAA. SOSI also provides NOAA with a data delivery service where daily Iridium transmissions sent from the buoys are received and automatically forwarded to NOAA by e-mail in a user friendly tabulated format.
Sound Ocean Systems, Inc.
