Sound Ocean Systems, Inc. manufactures standard and custom designed winches for a variety of marine applications. Standard products include five generic styles of winches including Oceanographic Tow Winches, Umbilical Storage Winches, Small CTD & Instrument Winches, Umbilical Hand Reels, and a "catch-all" category of Specialty Winches. These five styles each contain a number of general categories such as small, medium and large. Each general category in turn includes winches with a variety of drum widths, line pulls, line speeds and horsepower. The individual specification sheets contained here are representative of generic winches in each category. Any winch can be customized to meet specific customer requirements.

Oceanographic Tow Winches

The Oceanographic Tow Winch family incorporates three basic winch sizes including large OTW, medium MTW, and small STW winches. All the winches within this family have the same characteristic formed plate design and compact shape. Similarly, they all contain cable guide sheaves in their levelwind assemblies that can be instrumented for measurement of cable parameters such as line tension and scope. Winches in all three size categories can be acquired with standard and optional features such as integral or separate Hydraulic Power Units. Additionally, each of the three categories can be acquired with a variety of cable storage capacities, line pulls, line speeds and horsepower.

Umbilical Storage Winch

The Umbilical Storage Winch family incorporates a large variety of winch sizes that can generically be described as small, medium and large. Winches in all three categories can be acquired with a variety of standard and optional features as shown on the individual specification sheets. Generally all Umbilical Storage Winches utilize an open tubular frame design and are provided with separate Hydraulic Power Units. All Umbilical Storage Winches can be acquired with either Right Angle Levelwind or Goal Post Levelwind assemblies. As with other winch categories, these winches can also acquired with a variety of cable storage capacities, line pulls, line speeds and horsepower.

Small CTD & Instrument Winches

SOSI’s family of small CTD & Instrumentation winches currently includes three basic configurations. These are the SCTD-110, the Battle Space Profiler or CTD-110 winch, and the Eco winch. The SCTD winches can be acquired in both 24 VDC and 110 VAC drives. The BSP winches have been specifically designed to meet U.S. Navy shock and vibration standards.  The Eco winch is designed for CTD or other small to medium sized instrument casts and uses 110 VAC.

Model SCTD-110
The SOSI SCTD-110 Winches have been designed for small instrument casts including CTD profiles to 1000m. They tend to be permanently mounted and are mostly enclosed for maximum protection. With a standard level wind and a long list of options including 24 VDC operation, this design adds a professional look & function to any research vessel.

Battle Space Profiler Winch, CTD-110
The SOSI BSP Winch is designed for small instrument casts to 1000m. The typical application is a permanent mount on a mine sweeping vessel. They are extremely rugged with a wide but narrow footprint to match US Navy requirements. This 16” deep winch is heavily enclosed and includes a davit socket for local over-the-side operations and an emergency brake. The Series CTD-110 meets MIL-STD-167-1, type I Vibration and MIL-S-901D, grade B, class I, type A shock requirements and is powered by 110 VAC or 24 VDC.

Eco Winch
The SOSI Eco Winch has an open architecture design resulting in a very light weight winch for maximum portability. Designed with the help of a local major CTD manufacturer, this winch will tug 110# line tension at speeds of 1.0m/sec. The Eco winch holds 1100m of cable and boasts standard features including level wind, 1 hp continuous duty 110 VAC motor, remote control pendant, and aluminum construction. Options include slip ring, speed and payout display, wider drum holding 1900m of cable, and cable spooled and terminated to match your instrument.

Umbilical Hand Reels

SOSI has developed a new line of Umbilical Hand Reels which are essentially hand operated cable reels.  Given below are  summaries of the UHR-10x15x14, UHR-16x24x24, and UHR-20x28x32.  We also offer one smaller unit (UHR-8x12x12) as a standard product.

Umbilical Hand Reel, Model UHR-10x15x14

Specialty Winches

SOSI manufactures a wide variety of custom designed winches to meet specific customer requirements. These typically one of a kind winches simply do not fall into any generic category other than "Specialty". Three examples of specialty winches are included as being representative of this group. If your winch requirements do not match one of our existing designs we will be happy to custom design the right winch for your application.

DECK WINCH Model DW-15013-40S
The SOSI Model DW 15013-40S Deck Winch has been designed for large towed body shallow deployment, and similar marine operations. It is typically used with the SOSI Model 162-100-001 Towfish Launch & Recovery System. The large diameter, narrow drum design does not require a levelwind for most applications.

Model DSW-1830L-15
The SOSI Series DSW-1830 Diesel Storage Winches are self-contained, diesel-electric winches designed for cable storage. They are ruggedly built for shipboard use and are easy to install on your own vessel, or vessels of opportunity.
